Alternative to Wheat Bread

It may take some getting used to living without wheat. But today there are many alternatives. These alternatives to wheat bread are healthy, tasty, and ideal for people with allergies or gluten sensitivity. Keep in mind that bread made with flours other than wheat flour usually has a slightly different taste and texture than wheat bread. Baking experts recommend toasting wheat-free bread, as it tastes best when lightly browned. Wheat-free bread lacks the dense binding of wheat and therefore cannot support many toppings when used for sandwiches.

Rice Bread

Rice is one of the most common alternatives to wheat. When the bread is baked with rice flour, it becomes denser and heavier. This type of bread usually does not puff up as much as traditional wheat bread. When rice flour is used in baked goods, bakers recommend combining it with potato starch or tapioca flour. This makes the bread lighter and firmer. If you don't want to make bread yourself, you can also buy ready-made rice flour loaves. These breads can be found in the freezers of most grocery and health food stores.

Teff bread

A less common alternative to wheat bread is teff bread. Teff is a grain grown in Ethiopia. Like rice, teff tends to make bread too dry, so it's best to combine it with sorghum flour or potato starch. Potato starch gives a soft texture to most non-wheat bread and helps mimic the taste of traditional breads. Teff flour can be purchased on the Internet or in health food stores. Teff bread is also available at many bakeries.

Cornbread

Cornmeal does not contain wheat, but it is often overlooked. Cornbread is an excellent addition to any dish. Because of its density, it is not suitable for every recipe, but if you replace half of the cornmeal with a gluten-free baking mix, it will work for most recipes. Cornbread and cornbread mixes usually contain wheat bread. Therefore, when purchasing these products, check the label and make sure they are wheat-free.

All alternatives to wheat flour have their advantages and disadvantages, but the closest alternative is sorghum bread. Sorghum flour has a taste and consistency very similar to that of wheat flour. It is recommended for use in confectionery recipes and is also inexpensive. The result is a light and airy texture, very similar to that of wheat bread. Try also: Breakfast Bread

Millet bread

Finally, millet bread is made from millet grass. It contains a quantity of protein comparable to that of wheat flour and is easy to digest. Bread made from millet flour usually has a slightly yellow color and can be combined with rice flour. This is a good alternative.

Below we explain some of the available alternatives, along with their respective advantages and disadvantages. All of these products are available for home bakers and for purchase.
